We’re almost there! The Cité internationale de la langue française at the Château de Villers-Cotterêts will open its doors on Wednesday November 1, 2023. Launched by President Emmanuel Macron in 2018, this project takes place on the very spot where the Villers-Cotterêts decree was signed on 25 August 1539, establishing the use of French in official documents, thus supplanting Latin, which had been used until then.
It took five years to restore and fit out this Renaissance castel, the construction of which began in 1532 under the aegis of Françis the I, the monarch who initiated the decree. The Cité internationale de la langue française is now ready to welcome you to discover the history of the development of the French language, its spread and changes over time. In particular, you will be able to discover the “magic library”, a technological space containing thousands of books from all eras and all continents. This one will offer you recommendations for reading ideas following a series of questions asked by an artificial intelligence.
So if you want to discover this place that puts the spotlight on the French language and the authors who knew how to use these words from Molière to Victor Hugo without forgotting Milan Kundera, visit the Cité Internationale de la langue française.
