In the art of the bullfighter, Leiris finds the dizzying illustration of a ceremonial that strangely resembles both eroticism and the sacred, but above all writing: death is touched with the fingertips. For the bullfighter, as for the poet and the lover, he writes, “all action is based on the infinitesimal but tragic crack by which what is unfinished (literally: infinite) in our condition betrays itself.”
Published in 1938, this text, essential in Leiris’s work, has become the classic of bullfighting literature, indispensable to counter the detractors of bullfighting.
