The Atlas des champignons comestibles et vénéneux de la France is composed of a first scientific part and a second one illustrated. The first part deals with the history and the development of mycology, and presents a classification of mushrooms as well as a study of the 229 principal species of comestible and toadstool mushrooms of France. The second part is made of coloured plates representing the mushrooms from different point of views and in cross section.
The abundant illustration of the present work is actually composed of 62 figures in the text reproducing antique engravings after the works by matthiole, l’obel, l’ecluse, Bauhin, dillen, micheli … and 72 chomolitographs in full page of a great quality of execution engraved after drawings by Charles Richon. Charles Richon was a doctor in medicine, member of the Société Botanique de France and the Société académique of the department of La Marne.
A fine copy of this sought-after treatise of mycology abundantly colour-illustrated.
Provenance: ex-libris of H. S. C. Huijsman (1900-1986) on the half-title, great amateur specialist in mycology who gave his name to a mushroom, the Conocybe huijsmanii.
