Elegant edition by Didot illustrated with a frontispiece engraved by Barthélémy Roger after Desenne. Vicaire, Manuel de l’amateur, I, 1132; Brunet, II, 1735.

This copy was printed on large vellum paper from Annonay, with the engraving before the letters.

“Published at 6fr.50 on thin glazed paper from the Vosges; at 7fr.50 on thin glazed paper from Annonay; at 21fr. on large vellum satin paper from Annonay, engraving before the letters…” (Vicaire).

Exceptional romantic mosaic binding by Vogel, decorated with patterns deriving from the neogothic repertoire (rosettes, arches, leaves …).

This artist, of foreign origin, worked in Paris from 1814 to 1851 approximately; he supplied the imperial libraries and some bibliophiles with bindings. His bindings offer a large variety of patterns, but “it’s above all in the use of mosaic that Vogel shows great skill, technique and decorative invention” (Paul Culot, Relieurs et reliures décorées en France à l’époque romantique, 1995).

In 1833, “M. Vogel, binder, 40 years old […] was struck down by paraplegia with a total loss of sensibility”, then partly cured thanks to the care of Théodore Junod, doctor of the Paris faculty.

This binding is remarkably delicate for its patterns and the brightness of its red, green and aubergine, which contrast with the multiple gilt patterns.

Provenance: Major John Roland Abbey (ex libris; Sotheby’s London, III, 1967, n°1880).
