First edition of the Histoire de la musique et de ses effets by Pierre Bonnet printed in Paris in 1715.

Pierre Bonnet, doctor of the Duchesse of Burgundy, was the nephew of the Bishop Bourdelot, who had dealt a lot with the history of arts in general, and music in particular. Pierre Bonnet, heir to his uncle’s library, continued his research, but could not publish them.

Jacques Bonnet, musicographer and choreographer, brother of the latter, inherited the works of his brother and of his uncle Bourdelot, and published, after their manuscripts, an Histoire de la musique et de ses effets, depuis son origine jusqu’à présent; Paris, 1715.

“This history was the only one in France when it was published, also it gave its author quite a great reputation”.

This work gives precious information on Lully and his contemporaries.

Copy especially bound at the time, after the death of Louis XIV, in 1715 for the Regent, the Duke of Orleans.

The last years of the reign of Louis XIV were marked by disasters and sadness and the advent of the Regent marked a complete change of state of mind in which joy, dance, festivities and music regained their place.

Dedication copy bound at the time in red morocco with the arms and crowned cyphers of Phillipe II of Orléans, grandson of France, Duke of Orléans, Valois, Nemours and Montpensier.

After the death of Louis XIV, in 1715, the Regency which belonged to him by his birth had been deferred to him by a solemn judgment of the Parliament dated September 2, 1715.

From L. Wilmerding’s library with engraved ex-libris, sold 25 000 € in June 2007 (Ref. Paris, Livres précieux, n°116).
