First edition.

Carteret, I, 263-266; Vicaire III, 721-723; Auguste Lambiotte, “Les exemplaires en grand papier de ” Madame Bovary” (Le Livre et l’estampe, 1957, p. 17).

Exceptional Bernard Loliée’s copy on large, strong vellum paper, covered with its contemporary mosaic binding signed by Chambolle-Duru, active from 1863, well complete with its wrapper printed specifically for these luxury copies.

This would be the only copy of the 75 printed that combines the original wrapper with a contemporary mosaic binding signed by a great master.

A superb copy of Flaubert’s masterpiece, one of 75 on strong vellum paper, from the first issue.

There was a whiff of scandal about this publication, but it was an immediate and resounding success, and immediately won the esteem of Sainte-Beuve, Baudelaire and Zola.

When Madame Bovary was published, there was a literary revolution” Zola.

This great novel, intimate and realistic, was to have a profound effect on the literary world, and set the novel on its new course.

The copy contains the faults pointed out by A. Lambiotte.

Large paper copies were bound in 1 volume. They contain a single title page and 28 signed quires. The printer’s name does not appear at the bottom of page 232, nor the title “Madame Bovary” above “Deuxième partie“.

In his study, A. Lambiotte concluded that, in all likelihood, 50 copies on strong vellum paper were reserved for the author – an exceptional situation for a first-time author – while at least 25 others were sold in bookshops.

Superb copy of this great literary original edition, much sought-after on large, strong vellum paper, finely contemporary bound by Chambolle-Duru in mosaic morocco with its wrappers printed on light green paper bound in.

From the B. Loliée library.
